For anyone who has tried to keep the attention of teens away from friends and cell phones long enough to talk about drugs and alcohol, you know it isn’t easy! Because the Prevention Specialists at the Community Partnership of the Ozarks understand the developmental needs of teens, they are always trying to figure out creative ways to have conversations about difficult issues. They know that teens need to have fun, that teens like being involved in friendly competition with their peers, and that they need lively and energetic discourse to keep their attention. In order to help our coalition’s Teen Enrichment and Mentoring Project talk to kids about drugs and alcohol, they traveled to our site and led our group in the Drug Jeopardy game. The game works a lot like the t.v. game show but it centers around questions about drugs and alcohol. The game was easy for the kids to learn and they quickly got involved in the spirit of competition. They were able to learn facts about the risks of drugs and alcohol, while at the same time having fun. They have asked if we might be able to play the game again!

I loved the interaction with the kids and each other at our after-school mentoring program.  I also learned new things.  I don’t think we can over emphasize the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.  It was an excellent tool and the kids participated and weren’t just listening.  It made it fun while delivering the message.

Drug jeopardy is a resource available through Cafe Prevention that has been utilized multiply times by Republic Community 2000 at various community events. It is an interactive tool that provides a fun, easy avenue for engaging participants of all ages and at the same time delivering a prevention message.

Cafe Prevention has provided the resources we need when we need them. We recently used the Drug jeopardy game during our communities 4th of July celebration. It not only helped raised awareness of underage substance abuse but also helped bring positive attention to our prevention coalition.
