I surely do hope you "got" my Schoolhouse Rock reference. You're never too old to enjoy Schoolhouse Rocks - that's what I say, anyway. It makes me remember back to my days in junior high social studies class, memorizing the lines to "I'm Just a Bill." Our teacher, my very favorite of all time, utilized so many memorable teaching tools that stayed with me to this day. One of the things I remember vividly was her poster of a cat nearly falling off a tree branch (I always wonder if the photographer gave him a hand after snapping the picture... Just seems cruel.), and it read as you probably remember, "Hang In There." Around test time when the pressure was really on, she probably wanted this to encourage us to stay focused and not get discouraged. Or maybe she just wanted to give us a smile - hey, things could always be worse, right?
Well, if there's one thing kids are, it's visual. Giving them a memorable message paired with a gripping image is more or less guaranteed to make an imprint on their minds. I think this is important when trying to instill prevention messages into our youth. Preventing underage drinking and drug abuse may not sound like the most exciting topic to a middle schooler, but show them a picture of a toilet that says, "FLUSH... There goes your life down the toilet if you use drugs and alcohol" and they might giggle... But they probably won't forget it either.
We here at Cafe Prevention are continually trying to create memorable posters and other prevention materials that we trust will inspire change in the hearts and minds of students, parents, and the community alike. And, from the testimonies we hear, they do just that.
